TRUenergy was previously named TXU, an American company called Texas Utilities. In 2005, TXU sold their Australian sector of the business in two parts. Their distribution network was sold to Singapore Power, who provides power to parts of Victoria under the name SP Ausnet. The retail side of the business was sold to CLP, China Light and Power. CLP is a Hong Kong owned company and is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
As of March 2011, TRUenergy acquired the energy retailer Energy Australia from the New South Wales government.
