Aurora Energy holds licenses to trade as an electricity retailer in six states/territories, yet the company currently only operates in Tasmania. Aurora Energy retails both gas and electricity and, at present, is the only retailer available in Tasmania. It is expected that full retail competition will be introduced to the state sometime in the near future.
Tasmania’s electricity supply is mainly generated from renewable hydroelectric schemes; therefore, it is fairly energy efficient. Aurora Energy is owned by the Tasmanian Government and must account to both the Treasurer and the Minister for Energy.
In Tasmania, Aurora Energy generates, distributes, and retails electricity and offers wholesale telecommunication services through optical fibre networks. Aurora Energy also retails gas in Tasmania and retails electricity interstate. Aurora Energy has roughly 1400 employees and generates more than $800 million per year.
On average, residential customers can expect to pay 89.145 cents per day for electricity and 25.132 cents per day for energy. AuroraGreen pricing structures are also available as of July 2011, ranging from 10% to 100% GreenPower in addition to standard electricity charges. GreenPower charges begin as low as 0.602 cents/kWh in a 10% plan, ranging to 6.023 cents/kWh in a 100% plan.
