Understand the Energex Distribution Network in Queensland
Energex is South East Queensland’s electricity distributor. Energex is owned by the Queensland government. Energex has been in business since 1922, when it was known as the City Electric Light Company. Energex is responsible for delivering a safe and reliable electricity supply to over 3.2 million Queenslanders.
The Energex electricity distribution network encompasses 25,000 square kilometres throughout Southeast Queensland. This includes the regions of Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Ipswich, Noosa, and Surfers Paradise. Over the past decade, the population in this area of Queensland has grown dramatically, leading to a 30% increase in electricity customers. For this reason, the Energex electricity network capacity has more than doubled over this time.
Energex receives electricity from Powerlink Queensland in bulk through supply substations. The electricity received is then circulated at 132,000, 110,000, or 33,000 V to individual zone substations. Energex’s advanced energy distribution network of substations receive power from the main zone substations and transform it to 240 volt power suitable for use in your home or business.
