Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NBN?

Due to the privatization of the telecommunications industry, Australia was falling behind in the advancement of technology. In 2009, the Australian Federal Government started to build the National Broadband Network to ensure access to high-speed internet Australia-wide.
Today, the National Broadband Network is a Government operated network that allows Australian’s access to the network through the provider of their choice.

Is the NBN available at my property?

This will depend on whether the infrastructure has been installed in your area; however, the likelihood is that there will be some form of NBN available to you. We’ll do a serviceability check for you and let you know what your options are.

Do I have to change to NBN?

If you currently have either an ADSL2+ or cable connection, then yes you will need to change to the NBN. Much like the shift from analogue TV to digital, once the NBN is available in your area, you will lose access to the internet if you haven’t moved over to the network.

How many people have moved to NBN?

There are currently 8.7 million services already connected to the NBN. The aim is to eventually provide every Australian access to the network in order to ‘even the playing field’ throughout the entire country.

Which plan is right for me?

As with many other things, a broadband plan isn’t a ‘one size fits all.’ The plan that works for you will depend on how many people live in your home, how you use your internet, and what your budget looks like.

How much does NBN cost?

This will depend on which plan and provider you choose to go with. The NBN is a network that providers purchase access to at a wholesale price. They then provide access to the consumers at a retail price, with different providers offering different retail prices across different plans. This is why it’s important to compare your options in order to find the right deal for you.

Are a modem and a router the same thing?

No. It’s a common misconception that a modem and router are the same thing, but simply put a modem provides you access to the internet, where as a router provides you access to WiFi. Nowadays, a lot of modems will also have built in router capabilities so that you don’t have to purchase two separate boxes, but whether you need one or the other will depend on the connection type at your address.

What connection type is my address?

You may have heard that there are several different types of NBN connections. From Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) to HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial) connections, there’s a range of different connection types. The speed and quality of your connection will depend on which one you have at your address.
We’ll do a serviceability check for you, let you know what your connection type is and find a plan that suits your needs.

I’m not happy with my current provider, can I change?

Absolutely! As with many other services, the benefit of a private market is that consumers have a choice. If you’re not happy with your current provider, simply put in a few basic details and we’ll let you know your alternatives.
