How to save energy around the house

Saving energy is such a hot topic at the moment, that it pays to know what you’re doing. Literally. Here are some simple steps you can take to both save on the cost of your utilities, but also reduce your environmental impact at the same time:

    • Re-insulate your home. It might sound expensive, but this simple act helps to keep your home cooler in summer and warmer in the winter. It’s also important that all windows and doors are sealed properly to keep air in, which will make heating and cooling of your home even less expensive.

    • If you’d prefer a simpler, cheaper fix, try natural heating and cooling methods. Make sure to keep your windows, blinds, and curtains closed during the heat of those summer days. This stops the sun from getting in, keeps your house cooler, and even stops you from getting those surprise sunburns. Open up the curtains and windows when the sun starts to set, and let in the cooler night time air.
    • If things get too hot, flick on the fan instead of the air conditioner. A fan is 80% cheaper to use, and can help you save up to $200 a year on your bill.

    • If you do end up using the air conditioner (or heater, in winter), keep it the room that you’re actually using, and make sure all the doors and windows in that room closed. After all, it costs much less to cool down one room than it does your entire house.

    • Think about the temperature you’re setting it on, too. Does it need to be that low? When it’s hot, keep your temperatures to between 23°C and 26°C, to save roughly $80 on your bill. In winter, keep it between 18°C and 20°C. Every degree that you change your air conditioner saves you around 10% of the cost of electricity it uses. And really, you won’t notice the difference of two of three degrees.

    • Buy new light bulbs. The next time that a light bulb burns out at home, switch it out for a new energy-efficient light bulb, which expends 25% less electricity than a standard light bulb. This means that over the course of one year, you’ll automatically save 25% on the regular use of lighting for your home.

    • Turn your computer off when it’s not in use. Computers, and other high-powered appliances run on a constant 300+ watt power supply, so turning them off greatly reduces the amount of electricity you waste every day. In fact, switch off any non-essential appliances at the wall, instead of leaving them on standby. Appliances like your washing machine, dryer, TV, microwave, kettle, and your phone charger all guzzle down power even while they’re on, so switching off or unplugging saves you a surprising amount of energy.

    • Consider getting a water heater without a tank. The majority of homes in Australia still rely on a water heater tank which requires gas to stay ignited 24 hours a day. This wastes a significant amount of gas each year. By investing in a gas water heater without the tank, water will be heated instantly and you’ll reduce the money you spend on your gas in each billing cycle.

    • If you do have a hot water storage tank, change temperature down from 80°C to 60°C to save up to $70 a year in energy use.

    • Avoid the peak and run high-powered appliances like your dishwasher or your washing machine during off-peak times. This means you’ll be charged less for your use, as it’s outside the “peak” usage time. Give your supplier a call to find out which hours the consider to be off-peak, and do your washing or wash your dishes then.

    • For an average-sized household you really only need one fridge, so if you’ve still got an older fridge running as a back-up, why not turn it off. Older fridges use two-to-three times more electricity than the newer, energy-efficient models, and running on one fridge can save you up to an estimated $200 a year on your bill.

  • Make the most of our outdoors and dry your clothes outside. Whether it’s on a clothesline or a clothes rack, drying them outside uses no energy. In fact, drying four loads of laundry outside, instead of using the dryer, can reduce your electricity bill almost $150!

There are currently over 15 different electricity retailers on the Gold Coast for both residents and businesses, including:

But it’s not just the company you should look at. Here’s what to pay attention to when comparing plans:

    • Rates and charges – Start by looking at usage rates. With over 15 suppliers operating on the Gold Coast, there are plenty to choose from, so you’ll be sure to find a rate that sounds good to you.
    • Match rates – Ask the supplier if they’re able to match, or even beat, the rates guaranteed from other suppliers. There are so many companies around today that competition is high, and price matching allows you to get a better deal from the supplier you want to go with.
    • Choose the right plan – Check to see if your supplier is offering you a fixed rate or a variable rate plan. Most retailers will have plans that feature variable rates, meaning the price they charge you for electricity use can change. However, some retailers are starting to introduce fixed rate plans, where your energy usage rate is locked in for a defined time period.

Depending on your usage, this can end up being the smarter move, with the bonus that you won’t be subject to any surprise bill changes. But make sure you read the terms and conditions first.

  • Terms and conditions – It pays to read the fine print, so check yours before signing up to a new plan. This is where some companies can get you. Make sure you compare rates, tariffs, caveats, and terms and conditions from supplier to supplier before making a choice. Make sure you’re not getting into a plan that will be hard to get out of in the future.
  • Discounts – It never hurts to ask about a discount. With the amount of competition around these days, a lot of energy suppliers provide discount offers to entice new customers, such as a email opt-in discounts, direct debit discounts, seniors’ discounts, and even discounts for just paying on time. But make sure you know what you’re getting into. While it might sound like you’re getting a bargain, check to see that any terms and conditions aren’t going to set you up for some pain later on, such as losing your discount due to late payment. Also, check to make sure you’re getting the discount for the full term of your plan.Be aware too that some retailers tend to apply discounts to your usage charge only, while others might apply it to the whole bill. So before you sign up based on the discounts on offer, spend some time doing to the maths to make sure it’s actually worth it—it’ll save you in the long run.

One thing to have at the back of your mind when looking around for a retailer, is that while one might seem cheaper, if their deal sounds too good to be true… well, it usually is, and the retailer will most likely offset their cheaper supply fee with higher usage fees. So go with your gut. And if in doubt, that’s where we come in.
